Okolona man arrested in West Point crime

WEST POINT (AP) – Police Chief Tim Brinkley says he has called in the FBI to help investigate a weekend fight that hospitalized a 32-year-old man.

Brinkley says 22-year-old Courtez McMillian of Okolona was arraigned Monday on aggravated assault. Bond was set at $250,000.

Brinkley says if McMillian doesn’t hire an attorney one will be appointed for him.

His news release was dated Monday but sent to The Associated Press late Tuesday.

David Knighten says he and Ralph Weems, who are white, apparently were followed early Saturday from a restaurant where Weems argued with black patrons to another where Weems was beaten.

North Mississippi Medical Center spokeswoman Genie Causey said Tuesday that Weems remains in fair condition.

Brinkley says a grand jury will decide in October whether to charge McMillian with a hate crime.news-crime-arrest-stock
