The week after Spring break can be a problem for ball clubs, but the East Webster Lady Wolverines were eager to prove it would not be for them.
The Lady Wolverines fell to South Pontotoc, 4-5, March 20 but got the chance to make it up in the Houston tournament.
EW 4, South Pontotoc 3
A defensive battle kept the Lady Wolverines and Lady Cougars off the scoreboard through the first inning, but the Cumberland girls made a mark in the bottom of the second as Kerrigan Clark scored on Madison Flemings’ double over second.
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Cougars put their first points up with Lacey Higgins hitting a double and Mallorie Rackley dropping one in the hole behind second to plate the run. Breauna Holley hit a single to right field and Loren Long’s single scored her for a 2-1 South Pontotoc lead.
The Lady Wolverines held the Lady Cougars in the top of the fifth and evened things up as Kandler Flora singled over first and Jess Davis’ sac bunt moved her over. Bailie Springfield’s double sent Flora to third and she scored on a pass ball.
The tournament game went to a tie-breaker with Mackenzie Denton starting on second for South and scoring on Holley’s groundout, but the Lady Wolverines tied it again with Flemings hitting a ground out to third and scoring Jenna Pate.
The Lady Cougars went three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh and the Lady Wolverines made their final move.
With Flora on second, a sac bunt moved her to third and Kendall Wilkinson’s single sent her across the plate for the winning run.
EW 8, North Pontotoc 1
The Lady Wolverines started off their day in tourney on a positive note with an 8-1 win over North Pontotoc. The East Webster girls racked up seven runs in the first inning and held off C.C. Austin’s Vikings, allowing only one run in the top of the third.
“We played well and I’m proud of my girls,” said coach Lee Berryhill. “We just have to wrok on the little things.”
