The stage was set for competitive matches as the Hilltoppers headed to East Webster March 7.
The Wolverines and Hilltoppers were both champions of their respective divisions last season and both made the first round of playoffs. Between the two teams, they sent 17 players on to the State playoffs in individual events.
And both teams have started this season the way they ended last spring, determined to win.
Running four courts simultaneously, the teams completed seven matches with the Wolverines coming out on top as a team, 4-3.
“It was very close,” said East Webster coach Pam Champion.
In girl’s doubles, East Webster’s Taylor Davis and Holly Ellis led, 1-6, after the first set, but Houston’s Cameron Byrne and Brennan Bryne rallied to win the second set, 6-4, and force a tie-breaker. Davis and Ellis came out on top, 13-11, to clinch the win.
Mixed doubles also went to a tie-breaker as East Webster’s John Carpenter and Claire Ferguson took the first set, 2-6, but fell to Houston’s Lane Brandon and Hannah Welch, 3-6, in the second. Brandon and Welch took the win, 10-3, in the third.
East Webster’s Hayden Hill won over Paige Griffin, 6-2, 6-1, in girl’s singles and Houston’s Ezra Blissard took a win over Rhett Parker, 7-5, 6-3, in boy’s singles.
In boy’s doubles, Houston’s Walt Harrington and Chase Eldridge won over Hunter McCarter and Jake Wofford, 6-4, 6-1.
The girl’s doubles 2 team of Meagan Dean and Jon Hayden Hancock won over Houston’s Casey Jo Hollingsworth and Holly Powell, 6-1, 7-5, while boy’s doubles 2 saw East Webster’s Walker Johnson and Zachary Gordon win over Wes Craig and Zie Tucker, 6-4, 6-3.web tennis1 web tennis2 web tennis3
