All runs come to an end

The Lady Wolverines wrapped up a highly successful season, falling just short of their goal of a trip to State playoffs during North Half Tournament Feb. 27.
The Lady Wolverines sailed through district play, falling only to a tough Calhoun City team in tournament to go into North Half as the second-place seed.
They edged out Riverside in the first round of North Half before taking a season-ending loss to the Lady Red Panthers Feb. 27.
“We had a good run,” said coach Todd Hutchinson. “We hung in there Monday night and got the win to get to Thursday night.”
The Lady Wolverines had a 25-24 lead against Coahoma County at the halftime break, but the third quarter put them in the hole as the Lady Panthers outscored them 11-3.
“They came out and turned up the pressure,” Hutchinson said. “When they started running and jumping it really made it difficult on our guards. We worked on that all year. That was where we were most inexperienced and young. When somebody really strong and athletic got after us, it was a problem.”
The Lady Wolverines battled in the fourth, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
“After Monday night, Quantesha (Patterson) put up 31 points and Mamie (Hollenhead) had 20, that’s 50 points,” Hutchinson said. “Thursday, it just wasn’t there.”

Planning ahead
With this season in the books, Hutchinson is already looking ahead to next year, which technically begins this year, but in a new location and under different circumstances.
The Lady Wolverines spent the past year practicing at Wood College while going to school at Cumberland.
“We were traveling every day, eating lunch on the bus, then getting dressed for 40 minutes of practice and then going back to class,” Hutchinson said. “We had such a short time to get ready. It was hard to get a rhythm.”
With the gym in Cumberland nearing completion, Hutchinson is looking forward to working his team at home.
“We’re going to beef up our schedule and get some more time in,” Hutchinson said. “Hopefully we’ll be shooting in there by April or May and then we’ll have team camp. It will be a whole lot smoother transition. I’m excited and they are.”web nhalf1 web nhalf2
