BROOKSVILLE – James L. “Jimmy” Anderson Jr., 69, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. He was born in Macon to Louise Wilkins Anderson and James L. Anderson Sr.
He was a graduate of West Point High School, East Mississippi Junior College and received his Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University. He was a retired Mississippi public school educator. He spent 32 years working with the Okolona Public Schools and the Oktibbeha County School Systems. During his educational career, he served as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, high school principal and school district superintendent.
After moving to Brooksville, he became active in Brooksville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He served as the BEMP Cemetery Board of Directors and was a past president. While residing in Okolona, he was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church and participated in many community organizations. During his career, he received multiple educational awards and recognition and had the honor of being a member of the Red, Red Rose Educational Honorary Organization of the Mississippi Association of School Administrators. He married Kathye Susanne Barnes on Aug. 11, 1960, in Fayette, Ala.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Brooksville Baptist Church with Bro. Jay Spiller officiating. Burial will follow in Brooksville Cemetery. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Kathye Barnes Anderson of Brooksville; one son, James L. “Jim” Anderson III of Madison, Ala.; one grandson, Jacob Anderson of Florence, Ala.; and one granddaughter, Julia Anderson of Harselle, Ala.; one sister, Louise Anderson Fisher (Bill) of Madison; one brother, Joe Anderson of West Point; sister-in-law, Sharon Reifers (David) of Columbus; brother-in-law, Prentiss Barnes (Tiffany) of Seabrook, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, John Tyree Anderson; nephew Will Reifers; and beloved sisters-in-law, Julia Segars and Edna Ganaway.
Pallbearers will be Neel Abrams, Chris Brown, David Butler, Ronnie Durham, Ronald Keith Franks and Tyler Higginbotham.
Honorary pallbearers will be all past and present deacons of Brooksville Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church.
