ECRU – Bikers and joggers took advantage of the Tanglefoot Trail’s first official open weekend Saturday.

The trail runs from New Albany to Houston, along the old Mississippi Tennessee Railroad line.

Tony Moore, pastor of Watchman Baptist Church in Thaxton, rode the 9-mile round trip from Ecru to Ingomar with his family Saturday morning.

The morning began with a light rain but by noon bikers and joggers began to appear along the trail, which winds through agricultural land, small downtowns and rustic neighborhoods.

He said they are glad to have a trail closer to their home in the Hurricane community. Along with Moore was wife Danielle and their three children, Kimmie, Kailey and Allen.

“We’ve been going to Oxford to ride for a few months,” he said. “This is a fantastic ride. We rode a trail near Panama City Beech and this is just as nice as that.”

Greg Medlin of New Albany said he biked along similar trails while living in Michigan and is glad to have the trail in Northeast Mississippi.

He traveled the road the 20 miles from New Albany to Ecru and then back Saturday morning.

The 43.6-mile trail follows the route first established by the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad and Col. William Clark Falkner in 1871 and is said to have been used by early explorers and the last Chickasaw King, Ishtehotopah.

The trailhead begins in Houston and makes its way up to New Houlka, Algoma, Pontotoc, Ecru and Ingomar, ending in New Albany.

The trail can be accessed on West Church Street in Houston, West Front Street in New Houlka, Weeks Street in Algoma, South Railroad Avenue in Ecru, County Road 90 in Ingomar and Carter Avenue in New Albany.
