HOUSTON – The Houston High School cheer squad attended Universal Cheerleading Camp this summer and brought home several awards and recognitions for their efforts.
Cristin Cook, who portrays mascot Harley the Hilltopper, was recognized as an All-American mascot, placed first as Camp Champ, received a leadership award and was approved to be a UCA mascot coach.
Kaitlyn O’Barr was approved as a UCA cheer instructor for next season and Paige Griffin, Allison Pounds and Alissa Eaton were each named All-American cheerleaders.
The All-American status qualifies the girls to participate in upcoming UCA events including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Eaton and Pounds are both planning to participate, but Griffin is undecided at this time.
Chelsea Robinson was awarded a pin for Best Spirit during the week of camp.
In addition to individual awards, the team scored superior in cheer and extreme routine and superior overall in competition.
Sponsor Lakin Hillhouse said the team is hoping to build on their success at camp while moving into cheer competitions this fall.
“We have two regional competitions, then state and hopefully nationals,” Hillhouse said.
