Omie Autrey


OKOLONA – Omie Lee Motes Autrey, 97, died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at North Miss. Medical Center in Tupelo after a brief illness. Born on Feb. 28, l916, in Lamar County, Alabama, Mrs. Autrey grew up there but lived much of her adult life in the Okolona area.

She married Norman Autrey on Aug. 12, 1939, in Aberdeen. He died Dec. 3, 1975. She was employed several years as a seamstress for Del Meade Slacks in Okolona but will long be remembered as a master homemaker, a devoted mother and a doting grandmother to 11 grands, 22 great-grands and seven great-great-grands who loving called her “Granny”. “Miss” Omie’s yard was always perfect and her garden and flowers adored and respected by her family and community. She was the perfect green thumb and loved all God’s creatures and creation. Her cooking, her smile and her simple approach to life and living are legendary and she was a perfect example of living the ’Golden Rule”. She was a longtime active member of the Carnation Baptist Church in Okolona and was the oldest member at her death.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 1, at the Carnation Baptist Church in Okolona with Bro. Truman Carter officiating. A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Beavertown, Ala., with a visitation from 3 to 3:30 p.m. at the Church there. Holland Funeral Directors, Okolona Chapel is entrusted with all arrangements.

Survivors include her five children, Guy Autrey (Nellie), Sue Doss (Curt), Barbara Franks, Dale Cruse (Jackie), all of Okolona and Peggy Bailey (Jimmy) of Houlka; her grandchildren, Terry Autrey (Tina), Patrice Bryant, Lisha Kwaninski (Robert), Tina Sturgeon (Tom), Amy Chaney, Mandy Crane (Joey), Jamie Long (Amanda), Renee Collums (Scott), Wayne Moore (Marsha), Leanna Bailey (Timothy) and Norman Cruse (Jamie); 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Faye Barnes (Fred) of Sulligent, Ala.; two brothers, Elbert Cole of Beavertown, Ala. and William “Dick” Cole (Martha) of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Max Dale; a grandson, Davis Owens; and two great-granddaughters, Savannah Moore and Harley Autrey.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and noon until service time Monday, all at Carnation Baptist Church in Okolona.
