HOUSTON – The Junior Toppers had a successful week on the diamond despite a wet start.
The team was rained out June 10 for their match with Calhoun City, but made up for it with a trip to Vardaman June 11.
The Junior Toppers shut out the Rams, 9-0, in the first game with Kylen Carter on the mound.
“He did a great job,” said Coach Coty Cox.
In the second game, the Junior Rams put up a harder fight, coming back from a 0-4 deficit, but the Houston boys got things under control and tightened up for the 6-4 win.
“They (Rams) came back and tied it, but we put some runs together at the end,” Cox said.
Anakin Rish go the win on the hill.
Cox said the playing conditions alone were enough to show him what the team is made of.
“It was hot in Vardaman,” Cox said. “It was 97 degrees and I’m proud of the way they handled the heat.”
The Junior Toppers’ Thursday game with Lafayette County was cancelled so they headed into the week with a fresh start to face South Pontotoc Monday.
