CHICKASAW COUNTY – There will always be people who need help with medical bills, housing, clothing and even buying food for their families and thankfully United Way of Chickasaw County is there to help.
The Chickasaw County United Way Allocations Committee met last week to do the tough job of distributing local funds to local agencies that do everything from help those who have suffered a house fire to assist parents of mentally retarded children.
The hard part is the 33 agencies funded by Chickasaw County United Way have requested $177,650 for 2013 with an estimated $115,000 expected to be raised this year.
“The need is always bigger than the funding,” said Shelia McCool, United Way representative for Chickasaw County. “That’s why we have local people on the Allocation Committee to help us make the tough decisions on funding levels.”
Last year 33 agencies requested roughly $182,000.
“The Allocation Committee is the heart of United Way,” said McCool. “These are people from your community who know the local need, they know these agencies and they decide where the dollars go.”
Committee members saw representatives of each agency come before them last week to explain what their organization does, how many people it helps and exactly how United Way dollars are spent. Each agency is required to submitted a detailed budget showing where their dollars come from and proving they are good stewards of United Way funds.
