County gets $8,800 waste tire grant

1STOCK NEMS Chickasaw Co HOUSGetting rid of old tires is a problem in counties across Northeast Mississippi and Chickasaw County has a program aimed at properly disposing of waste tires.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has awarded Chickasaw County an $8,800 waste tire grant to continue the local waste tire collection program for small quantity generators of waste tires.

Funding for waste tire grants is provided by a waste tire account funded from a fee charged on the wholesale sale of every new motor vehicle tire sold in Mississippi. This fee provides the funds to ensure and encourage the proper management and disposal of waste tires in the state.

The MDEQ listed tire collection site is managed by the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors and is located on County Road 412 in Van Vleet. It can be reached by calling 456-2513 or 447-3910.

Information about this grant program and other solid waste initiatives and programs is available at www.deq.state.ms.us/solidwaste.
