HOULKA/HOUSTON – Although the calendar still says it’s winter, spring sports are just around the corner and organizers of youth sports in Houston and Houlka are already preparing for baseball and softball season.
Houlka and Houston are both opening registration periods for their respective programs with Houston’s open now and Houlka’s set to open the first of February.
Both programs are volunteer driven and both are welcoming in volunteers to coach, referee and assist in other capacities.
Misty Dobbs of Houlka said the registration fee in Houlka was not raised this year and will remain at $40 for one child with additional children at $35 each.
“We are staying the same because we’re such a small town and we have so many people with three and four children,” Dobbs said.
In Houston, the registration fee is $50 for one child and additional siblings are $45 each.
Gravat said the city league is experimenting with more events for children and youth this season and will begin with the traditional Super Saturday April 20 to kick off the season.
“Then we’re going to have a mid-season fun day is what I’m calling it,” Gravat said.
May 18 will be a family day in Joe Brigance Park with a picnic and activities for league players.
Following the league tournament June 6-8, players will not receive their trophies after their final games. A separate awards day will be held June 14 at Joe Brigance Park for all players to receive tournament and end-of-year awards.
“We’re going to bring them into the park walking as a parade,” Gravat said. “I want to be able to call each kid individually by name and all the coaches, too, and recognize them all.”
