Calhoun City will be the site of the first annual Calhoun/Chickasaw Challenge and a full day of hardcourt action is planned for the CCHS gym.
Boy’s and girl’s coaches from all six schools got together to form the tournament which will kick off its inaugural event in Calhoun City and then travel from school to school across the county line in following years.
“We’re going to rotate from county to county each year,” said Houston girl’s coach Vernessa Gates. “It’s all three Chickasaw schools and all three Calhoun schools.”
The day kicks off at noon and the final game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. CCHS coach Darren Coffey said the event is planned in sportsmanship and camaraderie.
“It’s good for the kids,” Coffey said. “They all know each other and it’s good for the communities. As schools and coaches that’s what we want to do, just let the kids play.”
That said, Coffey did add bragging rights will be part of the deal.
“We’ll all find out where basketball is hotter, in Calhoun or Chickasaw,” Coffey smiled.
